A new form of aerobics has been introduced to the local scene by a veteran bodybuilder.

Nardo Dean, National Coach for the Bahamas Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation has pushed "Stick Fusion" Stick into the spotlight.

Fusion Aerobics is a new form of exercise that has hit the fitness world, and it will likely soon be a fixture in the Bahamas.

"The plans we have to introduce stick fusion aerobics to The Bahamas are going great and we should have it here very shortly. We have already gotten accreditation for it in the United States so it is now an officially certified form of exercise where aerobic instructors can take the class and get credit for it," said Dean.

During the summer Dean invited Presenter Suzie Louis from the American company Fusion Dynamics to the Bahamas to conduct the first free sample sessions of the new exercise phenomenon at gyms in New Providence.

According to Louis, what makes stick-fusion different from other aerobic routines is the fact that a weapon is used to help with toning, and the routines intertwine the martial arts with fitness, utilizing not one but three different formats.

One being the Philippine Art known as Cauli, the second is the Bruce Lee System which is the JKD and the third is a Indonesian art called Pentjak Silat.

Dean, who has been working with Fusion Dynamics for nine months in South Beach Miami, has just about completed the Masters Course for the programme and will soon begin teaching local aerobic instructors stick fusion.

He said, "We have been working hard to secure a deal with Fit TV and the Discovery Fitness Channel to try and get some shows on those channels. We were recently highlighted on Miami’s local Channel 10 News as the latest exercise craze and the two founders of the program talked about the advantages of it."

Dean plans to return to Miami where he will work with Fusion Dynamics in the various franchise gyms in the Florida market as they officially launch the programme. Soon thereafter intends to return to the Bahamas to begin teaching.

"After assisting with the programme in the United States, "I will bring everything I have learned back to the Bahamas so that we can have the instructors here certified. That way we keep the Bahamas on top of the game in terms of the latest trends in fitness exercising," said Dean.

Stick fusion reportedly not only gives one a solid workout, but it also distracts participants from how hard they are working. By swinging and clutching the stick throughout the workout, students get full-body workouts. The programme also includes exercises that incorporate strength, balance and agility work.

Samantha Collie and high impact fitness trainer Javon Mackey were just two of the Bahamians who tried the new exercise while the group was in the Bahamas.

Collie who wanted to focus on her abdominal and lower back area said, "It is very interesting and actually I was looking forward to a change. I am ready to take it to the next level."

Mackey said, "It definitely works for me because it focuses on just a bout every part of the body, especially the waist line I will most definitely consider adding some aspects of this into my routine."
