It was another full house both onstage and in the audience for Miles Productions at the 2002 NPC One Stop Nutrition Western Regionals, Nov. 2, at the Chandler Center for the Arts. This final qualifier for the year was emcees by Ironman magazine’s Lonnie Teper. Top International Federation of Body Builders Pro Craig Titus awed the crowd with his guest posing.
Although it was his first competition and he came all the way from Yuma, Joshua Smith, 26, bested 18 men to win the novice and open middle weight trophies. He praised the professional quality of the event.
“The stage was very beautiful and it was a tribute to all the bodybuilders who work so very hard to achieve what's necessary to win at this level,” he said. “I knew nothing of my other competitors. I trained alone and treated myself as my toughest competitor. This is the mindset that you need to compete in bodybuilding as it is an individual sport, much like track and field or golf. I spend most of my time bringing up and improving my weaknesses rather than worrying about what someone else's are.”
He added that his main training strategy involved his diet. He used a plan for bodybuilding and counted and weighed everything he ate or drank. His next event is the 2003 Western collegiate championships in Pasadena, Calif. in June.
