ERIK Oksa knows all about sacrifice.

As a bodybuilder Oksa, 42, has had to give up his fair share of his favourite food items over the years. While most of us enjoy the odd late night raid on the Friday, it is all about discipline in this sport.

There’s also the hours spent in the gym getting his body ready for competition.

All the work is paying off in a big way. Last week Oksa, of Matcham, won the World Natural Bodybuilding Federation NSW title in the over 86.36kg division at Dee Why RSL.

It was an event to remember for Oksa, who also claimed the masters (over-40) title. On top of that outstanding double victory, he was also given an award for posing in each division.

Oksa puts his success down to discipline with food.

“Nice fatty food is very appealing to me, I’m no different to most people,” said Oksa, who is owner and head trainer at Fitness Zone, West Gosford. “But I can easily knock it back. I love pizza and pasta and I might have a bit of a splurge after a competition, but then I get back into it.”

“The diet is very extreme. You’ve got to push through on minimal carbs. It’s not only about muscle mass, equally it’s about definition.

“It’s hard on the body. You’ve got to try to be at your peak for one competition and maintain that condition if there’s another competition coming.”

A perfect example of that came at the weekend when Oksa picked up a third placing in another event at Tumbi Umbi. He finished third in the light heavyweight division with several state level competitors taking part.

Oksa’s big focus now is on the Asia Pacific titles at Dee Why at the end of October. Success in that event could see him compete at the world titles in New York in November.

* Patrick Valero, of Tascott, competed in his first event at Dee Why and was second in the lightweight division and fourth in men’s novice. He backed up to finish second out of a field of 26 in the men’s novice at Tumbi Umbi on Sunday.
