Local competitor wins three titles at provincial bodybuilding championships
It was Kelly Burns's night to shine.

The Prince Albert bodybuilder won the middleweight, best-poser and overall men's titles at the 2007 provincial Bodybuilding, Fitness and Figure Championships on Saturday at the Rawlinson Centre. It was Burns's first provincial title.

"It was an experience of a lifetime," Burns said Sunday. "It's pretty unbelievable and emotional. It's so surreal - and for it to happen at home.

"I couldn't have written a better story."

The top two finishers in each division are eligible to compete at the 2007 Canadian championships in Edmonton in the fall, but Burns said the national competition is not in his future. He said he would prefer to "finish where I did - on top."

The overall men's and women's provincial champions are picked from the winners of all weight classes. That group returns to the stage to again go through the mandatory poses for the judges.

The overall winners are the only awards selected at a competition's evening show. The weight class winners are selected in the pre-judging phase the morning of the competition.

Chris Yakimchuk, president of the Saskatchewan Amateur Bodybuilding Association and head judge of Saturday's championship, said selecting this year's overall men's winner was a tough decision. The six men were twice asked to go through the seven mandatory poses for the judges.

"Kelly (Burns) was the person who best suited and had the most criteria," Yakimchuk said. "There was a guy leaner than him and a guy bigger than him. It really was not an easy job."

Yakimchuk said judges look for an overall package in the competitors. This includes: muscularity (how much muscle the competitor has), condition (how lean), muscle balance and proportion (do the calf and biceps look in balance) and overall symmetry (is the left the same size as the right).

To show the judges they have it, competitors begin with an individual freestyle posing routine to music. The men then complete eight mandatory poses and the women five. Finally, the bodybuilders compete in a 30-second pose-down where they try to show their best body parts to the judges.

Some competitors add flash to their freestyle posing. Burns, for instance, finished by doing the splits, while another competitor came out in a cowboy hat.

"It shows us they put a little thought into their routine and got a little creative," said Yakimchuk. "It also adds entertainment value."

Eleven women competed in the bodybuilding, fitness or figure categories, while 17 men competed in seven weight classes in front of a near-sellout crowd.

"I'd like to thank the people that came out and supported not only me, but all the athletes," said Burns. "The crowd was really motivating."

Four other Prince Albert competitors took the stage. Linda Franc-Vickers was the most successful, winning the women's grandmasters title and the women's top-poser award.
