Pair allegedly shot businessman while posing as car buyers
BOULDER - A suspect in the fatal shooting of a champion bodybuilder is in jail and police are looking for the likely gunman in the Kansas City area.
Sergio Libman, who fled Chile as a young man and ran a successful roofing business, was killed Monday during a struggle with one or two men who posed as interested buyers of the 2003 Porsche he advertised online.
Alfred Gusman III, 26, was arrested Tuesday after voluntarily walking out of an apartment in east Denver that had been surrounded by police, Boulder Police Chief Mark Beckner said. He is being held in the Boulder County jail on two counts of murder and one count of aggravated robbery.
Police say Gusman and a man named "Mark" or "Chris" talked to Libman several times about buying the Porsche, but that their actual intent was to steal the car.
Police responding to a call found the 43-year-old Libman dead in the street outside his house at 3200 Carbon Place in east Boulder.
Beckner said the suspects fled in the Porsche, which was later found abandoned in north Boulder.
By early Tuesday, police, who worked through the night developing leads, were at the apartment complex in Denver waiting for Gusman.
Several items found at the shooting scene led police to suspect that Gusman would be at the apartment complex, Beckner said, declining to be more specific.
The second suspect and his girlfriend, Kimberly Nicole Johnson, 25, reportedly left in her car, a silver 2005 Kia four-door sedan with Colorado license plate 387-NOP, heading toward Kansas, Beckner said.
"We believe they may be in Overland Park, Kansas, but we don't yet have a positive ID, so we haven't issued an arrest warrant," Beckner said.
The second suspect, whom a witness heard referring to himself as "Mark," but who apparently goes by the name "Chris," is described as white, 5-foot-8, with brown hair and a tattoo on the back of his neck that may spell out the word "IRISH."
Johnson is blond, 5-foot-3 and weighs about 150 pounds.
The suspects apparently did not try hard to conceal their identities from Libman and his girlfriend, who was at Libman's house when he discussed the car sale with the two men. From listening in on their conversation, she was able to describe tattoos and the shoes the suspects were wearing.
"They even took a test drive," Beckner said. "The girlfriend had plenty of time to observe them."
The handgun allegedly used in the shooting belonged to one of the suspects, not to Libman, Beckner said. The fact that the gun hasn't been found is one reason police suspect that the at-large suspect may have done the shooting.
Libman last year won the master's division of the Nutrition Stop Natural Colorado Open Bodybuilding, Fitness and Figure Championships.
Friends described Libman as a good roofer, good businessman and dedicated bodybuilder.
Several years ago, Libman, who owned Sergio's Roofing, had a bout with testicular cancer, but reportedly had emerged in good health.
Libman "was a kind, kind man," said Erin Carson, general manager of the RallySport fitness facility in Boulder.
"I just saw him last week," Carson said. "I held out my hand to shake his hand to wish him the best of the season, and he pulled me in and gave me a big hug. That's the kind of guy he was."
Carson never knew Libman to be aggressive.
"He was a very kind, very warm guy," Carson said. "Obviously, he was very strong physically. He took a lot of pride in that. But he was gentle." |
