Phumla’s hooked on bodybuildingDate: 05.07.2007 Posted by: Anabolic Info Team South Africa
BODYBUILDING is regarded as a predominantly male sport, but for 26-year-old Phumla Magidigidi it is her life.
She said she has made a life-time investment in her sculpted body and is determined to go to great heights in her chosen sport. Magidigidi works as an Edu-Loan administrator at Walter Sisulu University and has been involved in bodybuilding since 2004 when she was introduced to it by a friend.
“I told myself that I would give it a try, but I got hooked and decided to really compete,” Magidigidi explained. She said she used to go to gym to keep in shape, but never thought she would become hooked on body-building.
Magidigidi said she has learnt many things in body-building, including discipline, responsibility and dedication in all aspects of life.
Magidigidi has participated in a number of tournaments and in most of them she has won 1st and 2nd placements. She is the defending champion for Buffalo City, Border, the South African Novice Championships and Muscle Evolution displays. She said what keeps her going is her manager and mentor, Joe Lekay: “Most people think bodybuilding is about exercising, but they don’t know that you have to stick to a special diet, and there’s lots of discipline because there are times that you really need to sacrifice,” said Magidigidi. She added that there were many challenges involved in this activity – and one was obtaining sponsorship.
She said last year she had managed to get sponsorship from Xerox Aloe Office and Business Equipment.
Magidigidi is a member of the OR Tambo Body-building Club, an affiliate to the International Federation of Body Building (IFBB) and is currently the chairperson of the South African Student Sports Union (SASSU) bodybuilding national team.
