An Independence police officer pleaded guilty Monday in federal court on charges he attempted to sell anabolic steroids to another officer.
Timothy M. Kamer, 29, pleaded guilty to attempt to distribute a Schedule III controlled substance. He is on suspension from the department.
Under federal guidelines, Kamer faces up to five years in prison without parole. U.S. District Judge Fernando Gaitan Jr., accepted the plea Monday. He will determine Kamer's sentence at a later date, following a pre-sentence investigation.
Kamer came under scrutiny last February after a fellow officer reported that Kamer offered to sell him steroids for bodybuilding. The officer then worked with investigators from the Jackson County Drug Task Force to set up a sting operation.
Kamer allegedly promised to get about $450 worth of steroids from a source in St. Louis. He accepted the $450 payment but later told the other officer he was unable to get the substance from his source.
Kamer is the second Independence officer to face federal charges this year. Brian McGarr, 42, pleaded guilty in April to one count of conspiracy to commit robbery. He was caught in a sting involving two federal agents who posed as drug couriers.
