Waterloo Regional Police Constable Ed De Jong recently placed 14th in the masters men category of the Canadian Bodybuilding Championships in Toronto.
The 42-year-old had earned a berth in the national competition after finishing second in the Ontario Masters division in the 2001 provincial championships.
"I was expecting fewer people in the class," said De Jong, who took up bodybuilding five years ago.
"It was one of the bigger classes that they had with 15 people in it. Usually you get about eight to 10."
The masters category, open to competitors aged 40 or older, is an open weight class. De Jong competed at 190 pounds, placing him in the heavyweight range.
"I'll keep at it. I'll have to go to the provincial championships again (in July 2003) and requalify," said De Jong.
Last year's provincials was the first competition that the six-foot-one De Jong entered.
