Police in Northern Ireland have seized a large quantity of counterfeit body-building drugs and urged anyone who may have taken them to seek medical advice.
The haul included a wide range of anabolic steroids and a substantial quantity of an injectable painkiller purporting to be Nubain®, which is legally manufactured by Bristol-Myers Squibb.
The police investigation has established that the items are fake and from an unknown supplier, and therefore carry a high health risk. The painkiller comes in 10ml vials with batch number BA561 and an expiry date December 2005, police have warned.
The Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety has strongly advised that anyone in possession of Nubain or steroids from an unapproved source stop using them immediately and get medical advice. The health department has also asked for people with information about the products to contact its pharmaceutical department or the Northern Ireland drugs squad.
Commenting on the seizure, Northern Ireland’s Chief Pharmacist Dr Norman Morrow said, “I welcome the fact that these products have been withdrawn from circulation as they pose a potentially serious health risk.”
