Bodybuilder Richard “Tricky” Jackson (
www.trickyjackson.com), a Kentucky native, made the cut recently on “America's Got Talent,” got bumped in Las Vegas but is bound for Jacksonville, Fla., for an International Federation of Bodybuilding competition, hoping to qualify for the Mr. Olympia contest in September.
How do you prepare for a bodybuilding competition?
I start 12 weeks before the event and change my diet and training schedule. My diet then will consist of five meals a day: I start with eight egg whites and two yolks; then 8 ounces of lean beef and a sweet potato; next 6 ounces of fish and green beans; next a 6-ounce chicken breast and a green salad; and the last meal is like the first, eight egg whites and two yolks.
And I work out seven days a week: 30 minutes a day on an elliptical machine or walking an incline treadmill, and weight-lifting includes flat benching around 375 pounds for chest, shoulder-pressing 100-pound dumbbells, curling 60-pound dumbbells for biceps, and for abdominals I do 100 crunches, 75 reverse crunches and 50 oblique exercises three times a week.
