ONE of Richmond’s biggest units is aiming to outmuscle the competition and claim the Australasian Natural Bodybuilding title in Newcastle next week.
Glenn Gattellaro, who works at Australian Sports Nutrition in Swan St, is putting the final touches on preparation for the event, which will be followed soon after by the ANB Victorian titles and the national titles in Sydney.
In a sport where many competitors build their bulk by using steroids, Bacchus Marsh resident Gattellaro is clean and competes in the natural section where competitors are drug tested.
After a series of strong results last year, the 25-year-old said he was confident of taking a step up this year to win some big titles.
It would mark a meteoric rise for someone who three years ago didn’t even know the sport existed.
“I was a plumber and gasfitter who did general training and a couple of boys bailed me up one day and showed me a DVD and it went from there,” he said.
Gattellaro won his first competition in South Australia several years ago and has not looked back since. His partner Karina is also a bodybuilder and Gattellaro said the pair “lived and breathed it”.
“For training, I do a four-day split with a lot of cardio. But it’s more about diet and healthy eating - chicken and broccoli is my best friend,” he said. “I just love it. It’s not a chore or a task, it’s a passion.”
