Robbery, drugs net bodybuilder jailDate: 09.06.2007 Posted by: Anabolic Info Team Canada
A "brash, greedy" bodybuilder who scored $1 million in an inside robbery of an armoured car and sold cocaine to Hells Angels bikers was sentenced yesterday to seven years in jail.
But Nick Nero was only ordered to repay $250,000, while Madam Justice Tamarin Dunnet found he received at least $1 million of the $2.7 million stolen. A sum of $1.457 million was recovered, leaving the company with a net loss of about $1.28 million.
"Nero was motivated entirely by greed and he made a calculated and flagrant decision to keep the amount and location of his share of the stolen money a secret," said Dunnet, who imposed less than the Crown's call for 14 years on theft, cocaine trafficking, proceeds of crime and failure to comply with recognizance convictions.
Nero, 31, who pleaded guilty, agreed he received cash but "nowhere near the amount that it's alleged that I did receive."
A gym owner in Niagara Falls and super-heavyweight competitor who placed seventh in the 2003 Canadian Bodybuilding Federation finals, Nero "took active steps to launder the money and use it to establish himself in the drug trade," Crown attorney Hugh O'Connell said.
