Kota Kinabalu: Sukma weightlifting gold medallist Yong Chee Ken and national lifter Jerry Nonong from Sabah are still waiting for the national call-up ‘promised’ by the National Sports Council (NSC).
Sabah Weightlifting and Bodybuilding Association (Sawba) President Philip Gisan said the national body gave verbal assurance to Yong that based on his achievement in the recent Sukma, he would be selected for the Projek Gemilang 2006-2010 at Bukit Jalil School of Sports in Kuala Lumpur.
The project is to groom and develop potential athletes for the Commonwealth Games in 2006 and also other international championships.
“But until now we have not receive any call or letter from the National Sports Council,” Philip said.
“They promised to give us a call after the Busan Asian Games but until now we have not heard anything from them,” he said.
Yong, 20, was the only lifter in the Sabah Sukma weightlifting squad to win gold medals. The Inanam-born lad won two gold medals in the clean and jerk with 152.5kg lift and overall with a lift of 262.5kg.
Philip said both Yong and Jerry are now training at the Sabah Trade Centre and Keningau respectively to maintain fitness and get ready for the national call-up.
Philip said training for other weightlifters is on-going even though there are no competitions in the near future.
“All the lifters are currently doing their respective training at the Sabah Trade Centre, Sandakan and Menggatal. “We are maintaining the training programme even though things are a bit slow at this moment,” he said.
Apart from that, he said Sukma gold medallist Yong Chee Ken and national lifter Jerry Nonong are still .
Meanwhile, Philip said Sawba would be holding its annual general meeting before end of this year.
“We’ll be having the AGM soon so that we can start planning for the association’s calendar of events for next year,” he said.
Sawba, he said, would be conducting a weightlifting clinic in Sandakan and Telipok in December as part of the association’s development plan.
