Schwarzenegger visited Sault a few decades back; Diodati's Health Studio hosted young bodybuilderDate: 02.06.2007 Posted by: Anabolic Info Team Canada
Walter Sarich remembers a time when Arnold Schwarzenegger was a little more accessible.
The popular Austrian-born bodybuilder, actor and governor of California, concluded a three-day trade mission to Canada earlier this week amid heavy security.
Sarich remembers talking one-on-one with Schwarzenegger several decades ago for "more than an hour" at a Sault Ste. Marie health studio.
"He was just starting to make a name for himself in the sport (bodybuilding).
I think he was Mr. Europe at the time, and he was in the Sault promoting Joe Weider barbells," said Sarich.
The conversation between Schwarzenegger and Sarich took place at Diodati's Health Studio in the 1960s.
The eventual seven-time Mr. Olympia and five-time Mr. Universe, had a meeting arranged with Joe Diodati, owner of the health studio, but Diodati got "delayed on other matters," said the Sault retiree.
Sarich showed up at the health studio at about the same time to see Diodati prior to leaving on an extended trip to Europe.
"We got talking as a way of passing the time . . . He was a helluva nice guy, humorous, very likable, with a thick Austrian accent and a fantastic physique," he said.
Even then, prior to gaining widespread attention as a successful bodybuilder and later global fame as a Hollywood action film star, Sarich saw potential.
"He talked about having little formal education but he came across as a clever man with smarts - you knew big things were in store for him.
"I didn't see Governor of California in his future but I did see success."
