Sperling, Millar take top honors at show

Kevin Sperling and Laura Millar were the top winners at the 29th Hawaiian Islands Bodybuilding and Figure Championships last night at the Neal Blaisdell Center Concert Hall.

Sperling, a 35-year-old Navy chief petty officer, was the heavyweight division winner. He was also a two-time state champion in Texas.

Millar, a 25-year-old Air Force officer, won the women's figure contest. She was third in that division last year.

"It's kind of surreal," Millar said. "I did Hawaiian Islands last year and Paradise Cup. To win an overall title feels surreal and it hasn't kicked in yet."

Other winners were: Joe Yezzi (masters lightweight); Kamuela Chun (masters heavyweight and masters overall); Jacquish Spencer (junior Hawaiian Islands lightweight); Jake Ness (Hawaiian Islands heavyweight and overall); Danielle Freitas-Ronquilio (Hawaiian Figure class B); Erin Jenny (Hawaiian Figure class C); John Ligsay Jr. (bantamweight); Eddie Eamaso (lightweight); Joseph Lacar (welterweight) and Darin Estinda (light heavyweight).

TRIATHLON

WEE FINISHES SECOND

Bree Wee of Kailua, Kona, finished second overall in the female division and Rachel Ross of Honolulu won her age division at the USA Triathlon Age Group National Championship yesterday at Henry Hagg Lake, Ore.

Jennifer Garrison, 29, of Naperville, Ill., finished the 1.5-kilometer (1-mile) swim, 40K (24.9-mile) bike and 10K (6.2-mile) run in 2 hours, 9 minutes, 36 seconds. Wee, 28, finished in 2:11:46. Both were in the 25 to 29 age group.

Ben Collins, 24, of Lake Forest Park, Wash., finished first overall in 1:57:08.

In the female 30 to 34 age group, Ross, 31, finished in 2:13:40.

The top 16 in each age group earned a spot on Team USA at the ITU World Championship in Hamburg, Germany this fall. The top eight in each age group also qualified for the the 2008 World Championship in Vancouver, British Columbia.
