Sports groups want to stop steroids in N.B.Date: 01.02.2007 Posted by: Anabolic Info Team Canada
Canadian and New Brunswickan athletic organizations say they want to change bodybuilding competitions and improve communication with the RCMP in order to stop steroid use in the province.
A recent drug bust centred in Fredericton has focused attention on steroid use in the city. Police say their two-year investigation, code-named Operation Jellybean, revealed a significant underground trade in anabolic steroids throughout the Maritimes.
Gary Bartlett, president of the New Brunswick Physique and Figure Association, says it's difficult and expensive for clubs to monitor and test athletes for drug use. As a solution, the association is introducing a new weight class in competitions, judging weight in relation to height, making it easier for drug-free bodybuilders to compete and win.
"It basically encourages people to train for shape and look, rather than just to get as big as possible," Bartlett said. "We're going for shape, have a nice look, not the big puffy muscles."
Canada's anti-doping organization, the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport, wants to beef up enforcement. Director Joseph dePencier wants to see more co-operation between the agency and police. The centre's role is drug testing and monitoring, and the group could benefit from information collected by RCMP in last week's drug bust, dePencier said.
"Were there customer lists?" dePencier said. "Can we take a look at those to see if there are any athletes or coaches or team doctors on those customer lists? And then we should follow up on that."
If the centre finds out an athlete is using steroids, the athlete can be suspended for two years, and stripped of awards and scholarships.
