Top line: A witty master of ceremonies, feats of strength, bulging muscles and acres of taut and toned bare skin combine for a powerful draw for the 30th Annual Mississippi Bodybuilding Figure & Bikini Championships.
Rob Jay, sports director at WLBT-Channel 3, keeps up a lively pace as the show's master of ceremonies.
With between 60 to 80 competitors in the show's nine divisions, there's plenty of posing to root for. Divisions, including masters, teenage, junior, men's open, women's open, figure, figure over 35, bikini and bikini over 35, cover competitors within a broad age span. Entries are open to Mississippi residents.
The show is a national qualifier and winners are eligible to go to the Junior USA, the USA, the Junior National and the National bodybuilding competitions.
Flex time: IFBB Pro Guest Poser Robert Burneika, the 2010 NPC National Overall Champion, comes armed with 24-inch biceps, and plenty big muscles elsewhere as well.
Another special guest is Jon Pritikin, known as the world's strongest man. "He's set several world records. He's the only person who's rolled three frying pans at one time," said show organizer Gordon Weir. Pritikin also travels internationally with his inspirational message for kids that hits home with crowds. "I had him here about five or six years ago and he got a standing ovation."
The show also will feature Judy Gaillard, a Ripley bodybuilder who's the first woman to win the Junior USA and Junior Nationals in one year.
With a crowd count that can range from 600 to up to 1,200, the show is a big booster for the Mississippi School for the Deaf Athletic Fund, raising money to support the program's banquet, jackets, awards and more, said Weir, who once served as the school's athletic director.
