Typically, women are not avid weightlifters. Of course, female body builders do exist; this is evident by the female bodybuilding competitions aired from time to time on ESPN or one of its subsidiary channels. Besides this small minority, most women prefer to leave all of the bench pressing, power squatting, and biceps curling to the male population. Female fitness enthusiasts are more interested in maintaining a soft, toned, feminine physique, rather than a body that could rival a Mr. Olympia al la Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Liberty Fitness Center in Highland offers equipment and workout plans specifically for women who want a slender, feminine look and feel. You will not find power lifting equipment at Liberty. What you will find is female-friendly adjustable hydraulic equipment that can be tailored to each individual's specific needs. Liberty does not use electric equipment, only machines propelled by muscle power.
According to club owner Jacqueline Robertson, Liberty emphasizes a holistic approach where fitness, wellness, and nutrition work together for an optimal result. A free nutrition program is included for every member and free skin analysis are available on weekends for both members and non-members. Robertson says Liberty is a health club where women can come in before work or during lunch for an intense 30 minute workout. She also believes quick workouts, several times a week is the best method for women to stay fit.
Liberty offers certified personal trainers as well as massage and facial treatments. However, according to Robertson, the most important aspect of Liberty is the feeling patrons get from exercising in a supportive environment.
“This is a club where women can come and feel comfortable going as they are. Women who come get a lot of camaraderie and support from other women,” she said. “It creates a social network that keeps them coming back.”
