Hitting the gym twice a day and eating lots of fish.
That’s what it took for Josh Kosier of Beloit to take home a prize last month in a bodybuilding competition in Pittsburgh. The 18-year-old won fourth place overall in the 2010 NPC Teen Nationals’ light heavyweight division.
“At first I was depressed on stage when they called me fourth because I was looking to win and I felt I did better,” Kosier said. “But when I sat back and looked at the magnitude of the show I felt good because I was fourth in the nation and I felt I achieved something. There’s always next year though, and I’m looking to win it.”
To prepare for this year’s competition, Kosier did two one-hour daily workouts at the YMCA. He’d start out doing weight training and then return in the evenings to focus on cardio and abdominals.
These trainings came in handy because he was judged on qualities including symmetry, muscularity and presentation.
For two months, he also had an extremely strict diet that consisted of fish and only 20 grams each of fat and carbohydrates every day.
“I ate five to six pounds of flounder a day,” he said. “It was horrible. I don’t eat it any more — not until I need to eat it again (to train for future competitions) that’s for sure.”
After the competition, Kosier said he went straight to IHOP and scarfed three meals within 10 minutes.
The 5 foot, 9 inch Kosier weighs 185 pounds for competitions but otherwise said he weighs 220 pounds.
His diet has relaxed a little in the past month, but he said he continues to eat healthy and to train at the gym.
Kosier has no off-days and instead now uses each day to focus on training a different part of the body such as chest one day and arms the next.
The NPC Teen Nationals wasn’t the first competition for which he’s prepared.
Kosier had competed in three previous local ones and even won second place in a show two years ago. It is because he performed in these previous shows that he was eligible to compete in the national competition last month.
He was also the only teenager from Wisconsin to compete.
Even as a little kid, Kosier said he’s always been interested in keeping fit.
“I was always doing push-ups because I wanted to be muscular and not out of shape,” he said. “I’d talk to friends who had gym equipment in the basement, and I always said, ‘Man, I’d be so big.’ So when my dad got me a bench press in eighth grade I got addicted and haven’t stopped.”
Kosier doesn’t anticipate stopping any time in the future.
He plans to eventually go to Blackhawk Technical College to get his GED, but his goal is to become a professional bodybuilder and to compete at a high level — despite the hardships that come with it.
“My family is very proud,” Kosier said. “The only thing they don’t like is the smell of the fish, so I have to cook it in the garage. Cooking fish in the garage — that’s another challenge.”
