A PAIR of Furness teenagers are all set to show their rippling biceps and toned abs to a potential audience of millions.
At just 17 years of age, musclebound Walneyite, Danny Andrews, has taken the bodybuilding world by storm while 15-year-old Chapelle Cooper, from Dalton, has also taken the sport to her heart.
On April 2 the two athletes will achieve celebrity status when they star in a BBC3 documentary on the lives of young bodybuilders.
Last year, Danny who until recently trained at Furness Health Studio, became the county’s youngest ever Mr Cumbria as well as the under 18 NABBA Mr UK.
He said: “The BBC were looking for bodybuilders and got in touch with a few gyms. Because I won the junior Mr UK people put my name forward and the BBC contacted me and asked if I was interested in taking part.”
Over a period of three months the BBC came to Barrow to film Danny training, eating, relaxing and competing.
The TV crew also travelled to Germany and filmed him coming fourth in the junior Mr Universe championship for under 23s. This success made him the youngest ever competitor in the competition and the youngest to reach the top-four in any class.
Originally the plan was to bulk up for the rugby field but Danny found the bodybuilding too addictive.
He said: “I'm small in height and I have always been known as little Danny and it really annoyed me. I put a bit of weight on and went to the gym and liked everyone noticing, so I became a bodybuilder. Now I'm known as the stocky one and I prefer that.”
Chapelle has been toning her body for the past year at Bernie’s Gym (owned by her father) in Chapel Street, Dalton.
Her mother, Linda Cooper, said: “The way Chapelle got interested was when she went to a show last year with her dad. She met Avril, a female body builder and a friend of ours and said ‘I want arms like Avril’ and began to train. “She’s in every night after school and on a Saturday with her dad doing abs. It’s been a big part of all our lives and she enjoys it.”
The final contributor is Jack from Wales, who at 13 is too young to work out at a gym, so instead trains obsessively in his garage.
