The Poconos is not exactly the hot spot for professional athletes.
James Mungro, a former East Stroudsburg High School graduate, made it in the NFL. Pleasant Valley graduate Aaron Fuhrman signed a pro contract with the Detroit Tigers just this summer.
Shaun Crump hopes to be the next professional in the Poconos. But one look at Crump and people know something is different about him — something special.
Crump hopes to one day become a professional body builder.
"A lot of people may see the word bodybuilder and not realize that yes, we are athletes also," said Crump, 28, who lives in Cresco and works with adults with disabilities at Burnley Workshop. "People are kind of alarmed by our physical status, or the way we look or the way we present ourselves, but we go through the same preparation as Tiger Woods or Michael Jordan or anybody."
Crump, a former resident of North Carolina, will be spending a lot of his time on Main Street, Stroudsburg, as he will continue his hectic work out schedule at Muscles Inc.
He trains five days a week, exercising different muscles in his body. Lifting weights has been part of his routine for some time. While at college, he played football for Catawba in Salisbury, N.C.
"Once I finished college, I realized that I was not going to the NFL, my daughter was born, and I was going to try to compete," said Crump, who weighs in at 237 pounds. "I kept doing little shows around and got nationally qualified, so I joined Junior National shows and before I knew it I really liked bodybuilding."
Crump has come a long way since 2002, not only in physical stature, but also in personal accolades. In 2002, he received first place in North Carolina Jr., and in 2004 was North Carolina's overall champion.
In 2005 he placed seventh in Nationals. He was featured in Flex magazine in the February, 2006 issue. The magazine selected Crump as one of four body builders to watch.
In the spring of 2005, Crump moved from North Carolina to the Poconos with this wife and daughter.
"Coming from a warm place, this is completely new," he said.
For the next year, Crump will continue to work out until November's national event in Dallas.
"The nationals in body building is like the Super Bowl of football and the World Series of baseball," said Crump. "As of right now I am just so close. I am fourth in the country."
