Zimbabwe has been suspended from taking part in any international weightlifting championships over non-payment of subscriptions to the Weightlifting Federation of Africa.
Secretary-general of the WFA, Samin Hanna, in his correspondence to the Zimbabwe National Bodybuilding and Weightlifting Association, yesterday said the locals will also not be able to vote at the congress because of the outstanding fees.
"It is unfortunate that you have failed to pay outstanding subscription fees the years 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003.
"You are well aware of the WFA constitution, which states that countries with outstanding affiliation fees cannot participate in continental championships and have no voting powers at the congress," wrote Hanna.
According to Hanna, Zimbabwe owes WFA a total of US$800.
But ZNBWA president, George Takundwa, denied the suspension, saying that Zimbabwe virtually do not have any active weightlifters and the national association was actually trying to revive the sport.
"For now we do not have any weightlifting going on because we do not have a national coach.
"At the moment we are in the process of reviving the sport which we last had actively during the All-Africa Games held here in 1995," said Takundwa.
The association had once tried to bring one Cameroon national to help with the coaching of the sport about two years ago but the move failed to bear any fruit.
Takundwa said his association were now working with the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee to try and re-ignite participation in weightlifting.
"As an association, we have approached ZOC so that they might help us in funding and developing the discipline since weightlifting is also an Olympic sport," said Takundwa.
Takundwa said they are in the process of formulating a weightlifting development plan which they hope will bring the sport into the limelight.
"We are right now working towards the formulation of a strong weightlifting development plan which has set 2008 as its target." |
